Poetry Fun
Resources for ResearchStudents are exploring all the great digital resources available through the Parkway Library. We are learning about an animal of choice on Britannica School Encyclopedia Online and comparing & contrasting animals using World Book Web. Next, we'll revisit PebbleGo to read some biographies!
Story Elements & Anti-Bully Theme - We read "Recess Queen" by Alexis O'Neill and talked about how we can ALL play together and have fun.
Brushing up on our knowledge about the PW Library and the checkout procedures with a little Scavenger Hunt.

Empowered Learner (Technology Standards)
Nearpod is an interactive presentation and assessment tool. The teacher moves the class through the content and the app allows students to interact with the media.
We will also use Nearpod during our Digital Citizenship and Internet Safety unit. Digital Citizenship UnitSecond grade students have started their Digital Citizenship unit. Our first topic is staying safe online. We will be using Common Sense Media's curriculum and the Nearpod app for content delivery and assessments.
Digital Citizens know how to take care of their technology and keep the PW iPads in good shape.

Stop Motion Center
Library CentersStudents are learning life skills as part of centers: communication, collaboration, following multi-step directions, exploration, creativity, digital citizenship and more. The students are having fun, solving problems through trial-and-error and trying new activities.
Non-fiction text featuresSecond graders practiced finding the non-fiction text features with a scavenger hunt! Using PicKids app, students took pictures of each text feature that they found in their book.
iPad RulesSecond grade students reviewed the Parkway iPad Rules in library class. We are reinforcing that we treat the iPads the same in our classroom as we do in the library and the same rules apply.
We are also practicing with a new App called Nearpod. We will be using Nearpod when we complete our Digital Citizenship unit and learn about how to stay safe online. Nearpod allows the presentation to be in front of each child and allows for each student to participate in the discussions by capturing their response on the iPad. We played a "Would You Rather" game and learned about how we are a community within the library and can support one another to be successful each visit. |
PebbleGo researchStudents researched an animal using the PebbleGo online database, then used ChatterPix App to tell about that animal. Finally, students shared their new knowledge on Seesaw.
Digital CitizenshipThis week we discussed Staying Safe Online. We talked about how being safe when we visit websites is similar to staying safe in real life. We also talked about green (Go), yellow (be cautious and talk with adult) and red (Stop) websites.
Another important topic we discussed was cyberbullying. Students discussed what this meant, along with ideas on how they can deal with a bully: walk away, tell an adult, and ask them to stop. Note: Family Tip Sheets will be coming home. Continue these important discussions at home. Home Row HandsStudents are using the Keyboarding Without Tears program for typing again this year. Here is a reminder video about the home row.
Fiction organizationAt the Parkway Library, the fiction side of our library is organized alphabetically by the author's last name. Students practiced ABC order with a partner, using Mrs. Lodge's Library website.
Alphabetical Order --> Mrs. Lodge's Library Note: There is more ABC order activities on the FUN tab. Our Hopes & dreams for 2nd gradeWelcome back to the PW Library 2nd graders!
We are looking forward to a fun year of good books, technology integration & FUN! We kicked off the school year by talking about the organization of the library and have started our two book checkout. We are also capturing our hopes & dreams for 2nd grade. Next, we will share these hopes & dreams with our classroom Seesaw account. Students will snap a picture of their hopes & dreams and add their voice! |
Maker May
Check out the Home Page for lots of pictures of this event. All grades are participating in Maker activities throughout May in library class.
2nd grade students are focusing on Stop Motion videos. First, they practiced moving lego characters and snapping photos. They tried things like somersaults, flips, and karate moves! Some were successful, some not, but we learned about what worked and what did not. Next class, students had lego kits available to create a background or setting for their story. Lots of engagement, lots of creativity, lots of fun learning.

April is Poetry Month
Students chose an animal, did some research and created animal poems to teach us about all these wonderful creatures. Students used PebbleGo, Britannica Encyclopedia (online) and World Book Web to research their animal of choice. Then, using a form-poem, students wrote an animal poem. Next, students will work on publishing their poems to share with everyone. Students can use any of the tools we have learned about this year: PicKids, BookCreator, ChatterPix, and/or DoodleBuddy. Students will share their poetry with Seesaw.

Opinion Writing
Students had to answer the following prompt: "The PW Library is the best, because..." Then, partners brainstormed reasons for this opinion and got right to work creating their very own book with BookCreator. ENJOY these awesome books/videos!
2nd grade students working on creating their "Parkway Library is the best, because..." books with BookCreator app.
Second grade students are working on opinion writing as part of Workshop in their classrooms. We are integrating this topic during library media time and are working on writing our topic sentence (our opinion), following up with reasons and finishing with a conclusion. Students selected a "Would you Rather..." card and formed their opinion statement and identified three reasons to support their opinion. Next week, students will work on writing their opinion paragraph and sharing them.
Digital ResourcesThere are many online resources available for reading. We will look at several websites and apps that students can use for both nonfiction and fiction reading. All of these resources are available from the PW Library website. See the October Library Newsletter for login credentials.

Hopes & Dreams - What do I want to be...
Reading Goals & PadletWe are talking about making choices and creating goals. Students were asked to think of a reading goal for themselves and write it down. We are using technology to share our goal with our teacher, classmates and families.
Students were asked to finish this sentence: My reading goal is _____________. Students added their goals to our padlet wall below. Have your child show you their goal and discuss how you can help support them in achieving their reading goal in 2nd grade. App Used: Padlet |
